A fairytale title for a lady with storybook amounts of love and respect from those who knew her.

Our friend Rannie Yoo died yesterday. After a nearly yearlong battle, she succumbed to cancer. She was only 33.

From the moment you met her, you knew that she was special. She was always smiling and nary had a bad word to say about anyone.

When Rannie was diagnosed with cancer last November, she took it in stride. She created a twitter with the irreverent moniker "tumorrific" and would chronicle her battle.

When I heard about her terminal diagnosis a couple of weeks ago, they said she might have six months. I thought I would have more time. I thought I could get through with what I thought were my tasks at hand and make my way to see her. My time ran out.

I will always regret that I was unable to see her before she passed, but I am consoled by the fact that she was surrounded by her loved ones.

We are all better people for knowing her and for having her in our lives.

If there indeed exists a heaven, then there's one less pair of wings going around, because one set is reserved for Rannie Yoo.

Hey look, I can post more than 140 letters.

So, stuff going on today that leads me to believe that the day after Labor Day is some semi-official first day of school for public schools in the US... Has it always been this way? I ask because where I grew up this was not the case.

It wasn't until I moved to LA and had to deal with education issues (working at the paper) and my nephs and niece going to school that I found out about this schedule... and what a horrible idea it is.

If I recall correctly, when I was in public school, the first day of class was in mid-August, two weeks prior to Labor Day. This gave us a close vacation off the bat so that we could rest up and take a breather from a new schedule. My school finished the semester right before winter break and would start the spring semester right after the break. Upon moving here, I found out that the schools here start after Labor Day, and that the first semester doesn't finish until two weeks after winter break. This made absolutely no sense to me. You send the kids on vacation, expect them to come back and cram for a week before finals? Does not compute.

I know one deterrent in LA, the people here complain about the heat in August. Aren't your classrooms air-conditioned? Ours were. Will two weeks really make that much of a difference? I come from the Central Valley. It's hotter there than it is here.

Put the AC and your kids back in the classroom. Let them finish the semester when it makes sense. It's no wonder they say our education system is weak.

So I haven't been on this thing in a while. I should probably use it more since I do like LJ and actually pay for it.

I have survived the 3 or so rounds of covert and overt layoffs and firings at my work. I still like my job, but remain skeptical and cautious of the decisions by management. Back in January I got switched to day shift. I now wake up at 5:30 a.m. to get to work by 7. Crazy, huh? I wasn't a person to wake up that early habitually and I still prefer to sleep in. But money is a great motivator. I get Fridays and Saturdays off now. I'm coming up on my year at work.

I've had mostly good times these past few months. Especially a nice morale/ego/self-confidence booster recently. I'm making more of an effort to get out and meet new people.

For the less than good stuff, I'm way behind on some paperwork, my room's still a mess, same stuff as per usual. The LEO thing with the sheriff's department has fallen through, so I'm looking at other options, including other LE agencies.

The house is abuzz with activity. Owner/landlord is doing a complete remodel of the house. We're expanding and adding more rooms, bigger kitchen, additional bathrooms, etc. So much of the house is torn up. Luckily it hasn't affected my room yet, but it will soon. I'm putting more stuff into storage to make more room and just yesterday stored away all my airsoft gear (which was a good chunk of stuff).

I'll check in on you guys periodically. You be good.

As Proposition 8 looms on the horizon of being passed, I am happy to see the status quo of the United States is indeed intact. We are a country filled with idiots.

In presidential news, I didn't vote for Giant Douche or Turd Sandwich. Go me!

(I've been gone a while. I have a lot of things on my mind but that'll have to wait until later.)

I wanted to share the following passage with you:

You want to know about voting.

I'm here to tell you about voting.

Imagine you're locked in a huge underground nightclub filled with sinners, whores, freaks and unnameable things that rape pit bulls for fun.

And you aint allowed out until you all vote on what you're going to do tonight.

You like to put your feet up and watch "Republican Party Reservation."

They like to have sex with normal people using knives, guns, and brand-new sexual organs that you did not know existed.

So you vote for television, and everyone else, as far as your eye can see, votes to fuck you with switchblades.

That's voting.

You're welcome.

or "Adventures in eBay-beesitting"
So, I bought a stack of Hori screen protectors for DS Lites on eBay so I could give them to friends and whatnot. "Hori" screen protectors. Hori is the end all and be all of screen protectors apparently. The price was too good to be true and it was. After the screen protectors arrived, I checked their authenticity on websites that detail what the genuine article looks like and how to spot fakes. The ones I got in were fakes, which I knew was a distinct possibility. Yesterday early morning, I wrote an email to the eBayer (at the same time I wrote that other email). It was a calm email and I just explained that I wasn't going to leave positive feedback because I didn't get what was advertised. Them sneaky Chinese, they pretended not to understand the language of the mail. Instead, they're pretending that the package was lost in the mail and have offered me a refund. I guess they don't want to risk the potential neutral/negative feedback. I guess they're gonna buy my silence.

A few weeks ago, I decided to spend part of my ecostim on a Nintendo DS Lite. Since I like to pretend I'm an individual, I was considering getting a used/broken DS and rehabbing it myself to trick it out with a different color case, or buy a new European DS since they have different colors. I was watching eBay and found an auction for a new silver DS. I win the auction for about the same price as buying a new US DS.

The DS arrives from HK last week. Upon my first inspection, I could immediately tell it was not new. I had a suspicion that it would be like that, since a lot of fake crap comes from HK. The case quality was OK, but the fit and finish were not up to par with items direct from Nintendo's factories. Some edges need to be de-burred and the top half is slightly misaligned. The serial number was counterfeit and I could not register my DS on the Nintendo site.

Despite all this, it's still a DS and it plays video games. So I'm fine with that. I don't mind a used DS, because now I won't be scared of taking it outside and risking scratches. I won't be afraid to modify its looks because someone else already broke the cherry. But it was advertised as new, and it was not new. So I start nitpicking everything about the DS so I could email the seller about my dissatisfaction. I did some research on what used DS's sell for.

Earlier this morning, after a week of building a full head of steam, I composed an email listing the faults and requested a $45USD partial refund from the seller. I felt this figure was fair and stated as such. I sent the email off at 2:06 a.m. At 2:16 a.m., I received an email from Paypal saying the seller had sent me $45USD. He sent me money faster than it took to write this LJ post!

I'm starting to like ebay's feedback changes where seller's can't leave feedback, negative or otherwise, on a buyer's profile. The buyer wields more power now. Now let's see what results I get from my email to the seller who sold me counterfeit screen protectors.

A few weeks ago, some #a! peeps ran across this link: Tech's 10 worst entry-level jobs. Then they go, "Doesn't danpa do that?" Lo and behold, my job is the fourth one on the list. Oh well, I actually enjoy my job though.

It looks like I'm not allergic to bee stings quite yet. (Eug says sometimes it takes a few stings before the body knows I'm supposed to swell up and die.) During my morning jog, on the way back, I felt a painful prick at my Achilles tendon. I thought it was a thorn or burr, but immediately I knew it was different, much thinner. I stop, look down and see a goddamn bee stinging me through my sock. I stomp a couple times and shake the bee loose. I expedite its death by squashing it under my Asics. I pull the sock away from my ankle, which pulls the stinger out with it. Then I remove the stinger from the back end with my fingers. I resume running, hoping I'm not just accelerating the venom through my body, bringing a quicker death. It was my first time being stung by a bee (I'm an indoor boy) and wasn't sure if I was allergic or not. The throat didn't close up, but my ankle has swelled a tad and it hurts a bit. I'll elevate it tonight while I sleep.

Nature hates me. Or as shad said, nature is trying to motivate me to run faster.

The Wii Fit has an attitude. It calls me fat and ridicules me. It goes "OUCH!" when I step on it.

Memorial Day weekend I worked straight through, doing 10 days straight, so that I could get 4 days off in a row for the next weekend.

That weekend I spent in Yosemite with the Ohana group. That place is wicked beautiful. Sitting in the middle of Yosemite Valley, you're dwarfed by shear beauty and size of El Capitan, North Dome and Half Dome. We arrived late in the day and went for a wilderness walk and saw the Lower Falls. The next day, us beginners attempted and accomplished the Mist Trail up to the top of the Vernal Falls, aka The Stairway to Heaven/Death. The way back down, we went via the John Muir Trail, a much longer, but less treterous (but not by much) route. The views all day were breath-taking. We spent our nights playing Nintendo DS. Our last day there, we had an expezzy buffet brunch at the Ahwahnee Hotel. Afterward, we went for a mild hike around Hetch Hetchy (or Eceh-Ecchi as some in my group called it). I witnessed up close as one friend almost killed another friend on accident.

This past weekend, I went to Disneyland with the Ohana group. I hadn't been to Disneyland in more than 5 years. I have bad memories of that place. Some of the group I was there with are Disney enthusiasts and knew what was worth doing and seeing. We watched the Aladdin play in California Adventures. I'm in love with the chick who played Carpet. We rode Star Tours (that thing hasn't changed in forever), Tower of Terror (that's a hoot!), California Screamin' (the music is too damn loud!), Indiana Jones (same old), Space Mountain (where'd all the neon go?), and Buzz Lightyear (four times, great ride). The food in the French Quarter was actually pretty good and the prices weren't too overexorbitant. They must use mutant chickens because the portions were huge! Free sourdough bread is good. Free tortillas hot and fresh from the machine are great. We watched the fireworks, which I had never done before. That was quite a sight. It was a good day.

Threadless is having a sale, and I want these shirts, but it's just way too many. The ones I want are: Emo Bear, Ignorance Is Bliss, Adorable Disaster, We Can Fix It, Ctrl + Z, Stick Figures In Peril, Everything Will Be Alright, In Case Of Zombies, Video Games Ruined My Life, MP(3), Funkalicious, Rock Out With Your Cock Out, Shotgun!, Mourning Girl, The Season Has Landed. I already had Emo Bear and Mourning Girl, but outgrew them. I need a larger size. I'll have to trim my list.

Some day I would like them to reprint these in my size: She Doesn't Even Realize, How Hamburgers Are Made, Emotional Trip, Legend, Dragon Flavor, We Are Just Pixels After All, We Are Just Pixels After All, New World Order, Clouds Within The Thunder, Electric Jellyfish, Wingtips, I Luv You CPU, One of These Days, We'll Fly Away!, FrequenCity, The Bright Lights, My Pet Human, and Self Destruction.

Update
I settled on Emo Bear, Mourning Girl, Shotgun!, Funkalicious, Everything Will Be Alright, Stick Figures In Peril, and We Can Fix It. I'll get the rest eventually.
